The latest Volvo lineup is already chock full of plug-in hybrid models, and their first ever EV, and what's coming next is a full-court press into an electrified automotive future.

Volvo XC40 Recharge

As the only EV in the current Volvo lineup, the Volvo XC40 Recharge has some big expectations attached to it. Fortunately, once you get behind the wheel you'll realize that it goes above and beyond to deliver a truly premium EV experience in terms of both performance and luxury. The electric motors in the Volvo XC40 Recharge combine to deliver 402 horsepower and 486 pound-feet of torque, putting this EV ahead of even the most powerful plug-in hybrid options available within the Volvo lineup. It offers great range as well, giving you over 200 miles on a single charge, with fast charging capable of returning 80 percent of the battery power in just 45 minutes. All-wheel drive capability gives you the confidence to tackle even the rough winters around Lewiston and Brunswick, ME, so you can drive your XC40 Recharge year-round without issue.

Volvo Plug-in Hybrid Models

A number of vehicles in the new Volvo lineup are available with the T8 Recharge plug-in hybrid powertrain. This system starts with a supercharged and turbocharged four-cylinder engine that delivers 316 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, and adds a parallel electric motor to boost overall output to 400 horsepower and 472 pound-feet of torque. The ICE powers the front wheels while the electric motor sends power to the rear, giving you the ability to use either engine on its own or combine their power for the best blend of efficiency and power. Pure Mode allows you to travel for up to 21 miles on EV power alone in smaller models like the Volvo S60 sedan, and when you run out of juice you can switch back to hybrid mode and the regeneration system will help restore some power to the electric motor so they can run together again.

What are Volvo's Future EV Plans?

Volvo has already committed to a complete EV lineup by 2030, and we've already seen the next model in their plans in the Volvo C30. This commitment to going green means we'll see several new Volvo electric vehicles across the spectrum of SUVs, wagons, and sedans in the coming years, and with technology only improving, so will performance and range figure with each new announcement. In fact, Volvo has already pledged to have a fully hybrid lineup by 2025, a goal they are near achieving, with just the standard Volvo XC40 and Volvo V60 models left off of the hybrid roster thus far. It's safe to say they may even eclipse their own target by making this models electric within the next two years, giving them a head start on EV plans for the future.
