We're Taking a No-Holds Look at Volvo Reliability
Without a doubt, Volvo reliability is and has always been high. This fact has been repeatedly proven by experts and drivers alike, including Irvin Gordon and the record-breaking 3,039,122 miles he traveled in his Volvo 1800S.4 But we're guessing you didn't search for information about Volvo reliability and land on this page because you wanted a fluffy highlight reel, so we're diving into the details behind the records and awards.
We're rewinding to the 1920s, when Volvo Cars first started, to answer the questions drivers really want to know, including "How long do Volvo cars last?" and "What's the best Volvo engine?" If a new or pre-owned Volvo model has been on your wish list, you can narrow down your choices and enjoy a test drive at our Goodwin's Volvo dealership.
The Roots of Volvo Reliability: How Volvo Engineering Has Outpaced Other Brands Since 1927
Are Volvo cars reliable? The real question is, "How has the brand achieved such a stellar record of outstanding performance?" To understand this reputation for exceptional Volvo engine reliability, we need to examine the nameplate's origin.
Volvo Cars has been advancing automotive engineering with trustworthy powertrains since 1927, when its first open-air tourer took to Swedish roads. Subsequent years introduced five-, six-, and eight-cylinder engines that earned titles of "legendary" and "bulletproof," even further solidifying Volvo reliability in the minds of drivers across the globe. In more recent years, Volvo vehicles have transitioned to more sophisticated turbocharged four-cylinder powertrains, with three-cylinder alternatives offered outside the U.S., but the brand's commitment to quality engineering has remained consistent.
That consistency is a key difference between Volvo and other luxury automakers. While rivals like BMW have spent their time creating ambitious new vehicle architectures that only reveal their shortcomings after reaching customers, Volvo Cars builds around proven powertrain designs, thoroughly develops and refines them ahead of production, and then installs variations of those systems throughout its vehicle lineup. As a result, Volvo engine reliability has already been extensively developed and proven by the time a model reaches our dealership.

Finding the Most Reliable Volvo Model: From the 1970s to Present Day
Thanks to years of data, experts have been able to assign a Volvo reliability rating to nearly every model the brand has produced. These ratings can help you choose a vehicle that has already shown itself to be worthy of your time and financial investment. Below, we've organized some of the most popular Volvo vehicles and their available reliability ratings, including a few variants that were just recently discontinued.
- Volvo Brand Overall Reliability: Above-average 3.5 out of 5.0 RepairPal reliability score1
- Volvo XC40 Reliability: Average 74 out of 100 J.D. Power reliability score5
- Volvo XC60 Reliability: 3.5 out of 5 KBB® reliability score6
- Volvo XC90 Reliability: Consistent 4 out of 5 KBB® reliability score7
- Volvo V60 Cross Country Reliability: 4.2 out of 5 KBB® reliability score8
- Volvo S60 Reliability: 4.4 out of 5 KBB® reliability score9
- Volvo S90 Reliability: 4.7 out of 5 KBB® reliability score2
If you're a dedicated auto enthusiast who enjoys collecting some of the industry's most reliable Volvo engine configurations, we think you'll be interested in tracking down an iron "Redblock" or aluminum "Whiteblock" powertrain of the 1970s, 80s, and 90s. These powertrains earned reputations for being indestructible and were discontinued largely due to changing emissions laws, not lack of customer demand.

Who Makes Volvo Engines: Changing Ownership But Consistent Performance Across Nearly a Century
Let's peek into the history of Volvo ownership to see who previously designed Volvo powertrains and who makes Volvo engines now. Back in 1925, the first Volvo prototypes were fitted with engines supplied by the Swedish manufacturing company Pentaverken. These powertrains were extremely simplified and therefore incredibly reliable. In 1935, Volvo Cars chose to buy Pentaverken so that it could design and cast its own engines and maintain their dependability.
Fast-forward to 1999, when Volvo Cars was sold to the Ford Motor Company. Unfortunately, this change in ownership also changed consumer perceptions of the Volvo brand. Drivers began to question Volvo reliability because Volvo vehicles not only shared platforms with Ford designs – they also had Ford Motor Company insignias stamped on their components.
Shoppers worried that this partnership spelled disaster for Volvo Cars, and some began to believe that Volvo vehicles were cheapened by their affiliation with Ford. In reality, Volvo reliability held steady, even under Ford leadership. In 2010, Volvo Cars was purchased by Geely Holding Group so that it could operate once again as an independent auto brand, and customer faith in Volvo reliability was restored.

Exploring Another Aspect of Volvo Reliability: Annual Volvo Maintenance Cost
Volvo vehicles cost an average of $769 to maintain and repair each year.1 On the whole, Volvo models also only make an average of 0.5 annual visits to repair shops.1 In essence, these cars usually need very little outside of routine oil changes, brake checks, and tire rotations, which means you can reasonably expect your Volvo maintenance cost to be quite low.

Maximizing Your Volvo Reliability: Interval Maintenance Is More Than a Manufacturer's Suggestion
Volvo reliability rating aside, the best way to ensure your Volvo purchase stays on the road and out of the shop is with routine maintenance. To keep your car as healthy as possible, follow these Volvo guidelines, even if your maintenance minder system hasn't told you it's time:
- Change your oil every 3,000 to 7,000 miles.
- Change all vital fluids, from transmission to coolant and brakes, every few years.
- Keep tires properly inflated and wheels in alignment to protect your vehicle's suspension.
- Replace timing belts and other critical components on schedule, or anytime you notice cracks or wear.

What Real Drivers Have To Say About Volvo Reliability: Reddit Reviews for Your Consideration
The hugely popular online forum known as Reddit is a source for millions to share their fandoms and seek information about pretty much anything. That includes a subset of drivers who drive Volvo models. Here's a sampling of what real Volvo drivers have to say about Volvo reliability.
"Year two with our ’24 S60 B5, and we absolutely love it! No issues after 10-hour road trips and 10-minute drives. We’ll be adding a second Volvo as soon as my VW lease is up."
Read More"Year three with my 2023 XC60. Zero issues with the car and zero issues with the infotainment system. Maybe once every six months, I reset the head unit, which takes about 30 seconds. Frankly, my iPhone is less reliable. I have physical buttons on the steering wheel, and everything else can be done using voice commands. It’s the best car I’ve ever owned."
Read More"Year 6 and 196k miles. No issues to date with our 2020 XC40. My wife is super happy with it because she can sort out some obstacles that a conventional car doesn’t."

What is the best Volvo engine?
The "best" Volvo engines are widely considered to be the "Redblock" design of the 1970s, 80s, and 90s and the "Whiteblock" design of the late 1990s. However, the brand's modern four-cylinder configurations sold in the U.S. have proven themselves to be just as reliable.
How many miles can a Volvo engine typically last?
Volvo engines are built to last for hundreds of thousands of miles, and some have even surpassed 3 million miles with scrupulous maintenance and care.4 To maximize your vehicle's Volvo reliability, make sure to follow its manufacturer-recommended maintenance schedule.
Is the Volvo T5 or T6 engine more reliable?
The Volvo T5 engine is thought to be more reliable than the Volvo T6 because it has fewer parts and a more straightforward design. The T5 is a 2.0-liter turbocharged – but not supercharged – four-cylinder, which means it experiences less mechanical strain.
Customer Review: Long-Term Volvo Ownership Experience

I originally wrote this review five years ago when I bought my sixth Volvo from Goodwin's Volvo. Now that I have bought my seventh, I will update it. There is still no other place I would go. I call them, tell them I am ready for a new one and what I am interested in, and I arrive to find several options waiting for me. The entire process takes about an hour!I have worked with Rich Armstrong and his sales team for many years, and they are all wonderful. This newest Volvo was a bit of a challenge to learn since the technology in the vehicle is quite extensive. However, they are up to the challenge, as they have Deni Nakonecni on board, who will patiently work with you to learn the ropes. Once I learned it, the new technology really enhanced the driving experience.Of course, the service department is superior. Marc Bernier and his colleagues are without a doubt the top service personnel in the state of Maine.
